UNIT 1 EVALUATION
For Unit 1 we have done a variety of personal projects such as abstraction, edges and street photography but the two that I found most intereting was edges and street photography. I think those are the two I tried my hardest in and tried to finish. I think this because it provides the most information on what we have been learning about and how much I understood what I was doing so that the person that's viewing my page understands it.
My first personal project was street photogarphy. When we were first introduced to this theme I didn't think I would like it because it didn't think I would take good pictures and be intreged with the work. The photographers were all into their work and they inspired me to try. I wanted to try and take pictures like them but they all of them were taken of strangers. This theme was really enjoyable because we were able to roam around taking pictures of people and explore more about street photography also it was interesting to see how photographers feel when they take pictures in public. It was awkward to take pictures in public because people didn't want to be photographed. For our research of street photography we watched a documentary called "Everybodys street". In the documentary we learned about alot of successful photographers such as Bruce Davidson, Elliot Erwitt, Jill Freedman, Joel Meyeowitz ect. The documentary helped me understand street photography and the rules of taking pictures.
When we finished watching the documentary I analysed one of the photographers images. I researched and and analysed Martha Cooper. I feel like I could have analysed her work more and gone into more detail of her work. It would have been more productive if i went into her work more. Marthas work really caught my eye because the images she took had a meaning behind it and you could really tell she works hard on her work. Her work is centered around the community and everything around her. I feel like I should do more research on her work because it has interested me. What I have learnt in street photography is that you take pictures around you and concentrate on the things around you.
I have explored a wide range of processes and techniques using the DSLR and using my phone and making cyanotypes, photograms and using photoshop to change the colour and texture of the original image. My first set of images were for street photography and then slightly changing them. For example the looking down method. I was able to understand this because I saw how Martha cooper did the looking down method. I demonstrated how I done my one. I refined my work in many ways such as tilting the camera in different angles or having in low or high angles. I did this because most street photographers always had it different they never had their work straight.
The other project theme we done was edges, In my opinion I partically didn't find it hard because you had to take pictures from different angles. Edges was a interesting theme to examine because there was alot of exploring and experimenting to do in edges. I began this project by making a pinterest of interesting images of edges and peoples interpret of edges. I found all the images that I thought was interesting and to do with edges and pinned them to my page and screenshotted it then put it on my website for people to see what I think of edges and if their view is different to mine. I did research on Randy GRSKOVIC and his work intreged me because he had different ideas it wasn't just like how normal photographer take their pictures. He takes his pictures and rearanges them so they look unique. He uses his imigination when it comes to photography. To take the pictures I had to apply my knowledge and think of ideas, I used different lenses to make the images look abstract aswell. The composition of his work was geometrical, he uses lines and shapes alot in his work.
For my final piece on my personal project {edges}. I took pictures of my face and used a circle cutter to cut it out in circles, after that I done the exact same thing to two of the same images. I stuck the images on top of eachother to make a face. I done this by having one full image with holes or cut out parts and then get two more images and cut holes in those and stuck them on top of eachother to make an inaccurate face. For my second image I used the left over cut outs and stuck them on card to make a unique portriat. I tried to to make an illusion for both the images to get people confused on how I merged the picture from just pictures of my face to amazing portrait.
We have started our own persoanl projects, where we all got to pick what we wanted to do. It was out of Natural world, Fragments and openings. I chose Natural world because it uses alot of techniques and processes in it. In the beginning we had to write about why we chose it and we had to take pictures of what we think is nature and show our understanding of what we have chosen.
In conclusion we have used alot of techniques and proccesses in our work to get up to this point. We have used photshop and we have made photograms and cyanotypes. We have also used a range of cameras such as the DSLR and Canon, We also used differnt lenses.
