personal project:abstraction
Abstract photography concentrates on shape, form, colour, pattern and texture. The viewer is often unable to see the whole object of the image. The subject of the photo is often only a small part of the idea of the image.
This project is about how the camera can draw attention to the formal elements of art in order to create images.
This project is about how the camera can draw attention to the formal elements of art in order to create images.
The formal elements
Focus: Which areas appear clearest or sharpest in the photograph? Which do not?
Light: Which areas of the photograph are brightest? Are there any shadows? Does the photograph allow you to guess the time of day? Is the light natural or artificial? Harsh or soft? Reflected or direct?
Line: Are there objects in the photograph that act as lines? Are they straight, curvy, thin, thick? Do the lines create direction in the photograph? Do they outline? Do the lines show movement or energy?
Repetition: Are there any objects, shapes or lines which repeat and create a pattern?
Shape: Do you see geometric (straight edged) or organic (curvy) shapes? Which are they?
Space:Is there depth to the photograph or does it seem shallow? What creates this appearance? Are there important negative (empty) spaces in addition to positive (solid) spaces? Is there depth created by spatial illusions i.e. perspective?
Texture: If you could touch the surface of the photograph how would it feel? How do the objects in the picture look like they would feel?
Value/Tone: Is there a range of tones from dark to light? Where is the darkest value? Where is the lightest?

The interesting element in this image is line and shape. I chose this image because it has a good range of line and the amount of tone. The tone of the picture is mainly dark, but has a bit of light.
The interesting element in this image is that it is focused. I picked this image because the rocks are in line and particulary purposely focused on and the rest of this image is out of focus and unclear
experiment:photograms
This is my photogram and I think that this is abstract because it is not similar to anyone elses and it is my own idea and no one has it. It has curvy lines and left alot of space around it to make it look more abstract and I had this idea because I thought It would look good and it inspired to do more experiments on my work.
Ernst haas
the photo i liked from ernst haas
This photograph is by Ernst Haas.In this photograph i see a different tone of colours and what looks like water. The words i would use to describe this picture this picture is ''fascinating" because it has a bit of water but looks like the paper was ripped up a bit.I would describe this photograph to someone who could not see it or have never heard of the artist before as the photography work is intriguing.I would say it has contrast and a range of colours. The light shows the water and the waterfall and how it has a lot of focus. Also their is a range of tone because the water is a light shade and the rock part is a dark blue shade. There isn't really any shape and some of the area is rounded. The lines in the picture had a lot of detail.I think this picture is naturalistic because it is water and water is natural. It is still abstract because it has an effect with the shapes and the blue glistening water. The things that seem new to me is how he took the image and made it to look like that, and how it is crumpled up but you can still see most of the picture clearly.
alfred stieglitz
The image I liked from him
This photograph is by Alfred Stieglitz. In this photograph I see a variety of light and tone. The words I would use this photo is abstract and clear. The image has a clear sense such as the photographer taking a clear image they made sure that they were far away instead if being really close and it looks like the image has a purpose and was positioned like this for a reason. If no one had ever seen this picture I would tell them that it was light and dark and that the grass and trees look like they were positioned in a certain way to take the image.
uta barth
This photograph was taken by Uta barth. In this photograph it is light and unfocused. The image looks like it is being taken out of a window and made unfocused to make us think what it is or see things from a different perspective. The image has a sense of unclearness and the lighting just positioned in a way to make it abstract. If someone hadn't seen it and wanted me to tell them what it looked like. I would tell them that is clear but it has pots of light and unclear on what the image really is.
IN CLASS
I took these images because It was natural and my perspective on things and what nature was to me. I mostly took pictures of trees, plants and flowers because I thought thats what nature was all about so I took them. I made them look at abstract as I could with nature because I like taking images of nature
I took more images of nature because you can't only have one set of images and I wanted to make more but different this time like from different views and heights.
Saul Leiter paintings
These are a few of saul leiters images. I have these because I wanted to show what his painting looked like and how we looked at them into detail so we could make our own ones.
iN CLASS
I made these images because not everything in abstraction is to do with nature so I used the things around me such as people and objects around me to take another set of images.
IN CLASS
I decided to use more people and objects around me to make my images look more abstract and taking images from a different view and perspective such as taking it from a window. I decided to use that idea and make a set of images with it.

Saul leiters images intreged me because they were interesting and abstract. He take images that people wouldn't htink is interesting and makes them interesting and inspires people to make images like his work.

photos taken in class
I took more images using the school to take more abstract images and using friends. I took my images close up and far away and also clear and blurry. I done this because it's my ways of viewing abstraction.
a trip to the photographer's gallery
my photography photos from the trip
I took these set of images when we were on a photography trip. We got given cameras and we took images that we thought were abstract. I was in a group where we took images everywhere and from every angle so it looked interesting. I took pictures that were clear and fuzzy. When we up in london we were allowed to take pictures of anything so we all took different images such as taking pictures of books, people and pavements.
photoshop edit
I was inspired to do my final product like this because Alfred stieglitz takes pictures to do with nature and that's also I see abstraction. I decided to take pictures of nature because that's what I found interesting about abstraction. When I saw those photos I decided it looked good and thought it would be good to use as a final piece. I decided to experiment with photoshop and got my images of nature and started putting things together and changing the colour. I made this by getting my image changing the colour and mixing colours around and cutting it in four and screenshotting it make them four different images from one whole image.
